Zyklus

UX/UI Design - Mobile

Overview

There is an increasing demand for eco-friendly fashion. Shoppers, especially younger generations, want to spend their money with retailers whose brand values mirror their own personal views. This means socially conscious, ethical, organic, natural and sustainable. However, a dedicated platform facilitating direct connections between customers and designers is notably absent. This study explores Zyklus' role in curbing fast fashion waste and ensuring better working conditions, while also highlighting the environmental, social, and personal significance of upcycling.

Problem

Textile production contributes more to climate change than international aviation and shipping combined. More than $500 billion of value is lost every year due to clothing underutilization and the lack of recycling. The growing demand for ethical fashion remains hindered by the absence of a dedicated platform.

Research

We started off the project by defining a research plan by setting out initial thoughts on goals, methodologies, participants and timeline. This research plan seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of the target audience, market dynamics, and competitive landscape.

User Interviews & Online Surveys

We conducted user interviews and surveys with the intended target audience, to gain valuable insights into their perspectives, habits, and attitudes related to upcycling, thrifting, sustainable fashion, and conscious consumption.

Generally, people said they would recycle more if it was easily accessible, and a lot of them wasn't sure where to find locations for textile recycling. People love going to thrift stores and occasionally donating old clothing.

Accessibility

Users emphasized the importance of easy access or method to recycle textile

Personalization

Users indicated interest to reimagine and optimize their existing wardrobe through upcycling.

Persona & User Journey

Based on the research findings, our target audience consists of:

Inspired Innovators, young millennials who prioritizes forward-thinking and innovation, Enthusiastic Experts that are vocal about sustainable living,

Considerate Environmentalists with a mainstream view on sustainability, and the Reserved Rationalists that prioritize value and convenience above anything else.

Claire, Francis, and Jason have been defined as the personas that would represent the user archetype for future decision-making and the development of the design.

Task Flow

We started empathizing with Claire by creating a task to understand how she would upcycle her clothes using the app.

Claire wants to refresh her wardrobe by upcycling and proceeds to open the app and browses.

User Flow

To further study how Claire would interact with the app, we defined a few scenarios: viewing the design progress of her project, exploring designers' portfolio and profile before creating a new project.

Sketches & Wireframes

Finally, we synthesized our best ideas and moved forward into the wireframing process. Aligning the design with user preferences and needs identified during the research phase.

Style Quiz

The Style Quiz feature empowers users to effortlessly define their unique fashion preferences. By inputting accurate body measurements, clothing sizes, and selecting preferred styles such as casual or business casual, users create a personalized profile. Adding favorite clothing brands refines the experience, allowing the app to generate tailored recommendations that resonate with the user's individual taste.

Connect with Designers

The Connect with Designers feature establishes a direct line of communication between users and their chosen designers. This facilitates effortless discussions about the user's envisioned upcycling projects, enabling them to convey specific preferences, modifications, and design concepts. Through this one-on-one chat, users can collaborate closely, making the process of transforming their clothing items into unique, personalized pieces intuitive and enjoyable.

Real Time Tracking

The feature offers users transparency and peace of mind throughout their upcycling journey. It allows them to follow the progress of their Zyklus Kit, from its reception at the facility to its journey to the designer. Users are kept informed about the status of their design, whether it's approved or requires modifications by the designer. Finally, the feature provides an anticipated timeline for the return of the completed upcycled package, ensuring users stay informed every step of the way.

Usability Testing

Once the prototype was ready, we conducted a usability testing with a group of participants. We asked them to complete a few tasks on the prototype to observe how users interact and navigate within the app.

Takeaways

With Zyklus, our aim was to illustrate that upcycling and sustainable fashion can be approachable, enjoyable, and budget-friendly. Furthermore, we recognized the gap in the market for a dedicated sustainable fashion platform and worked to provide a solution for people who care about the environment and their clothing choices.
